Inspiring History Teaching Awards

HTANI were extremely fortunate in the past year to partner with Historic Royal Palaces on the Inspiring History Teaching Awards 2026. This was an incredible competition that highlighted and celebrated the work of exceptional teachers throughout the whole of the UK. The 1000+ entries were judged on how they used innovative methods and creativity, inspired curiosity, engaged with local history and diverse global perspectives, while also ensuring that the learning was inclusive and accessible to all abilities. Ten overall regional winners were picked and invited to a Gala Prize Winning Ceremony in the Tower of London on 21 June 2026, hosted by Anita Rani from the BBC. They were given the treat of an extra special tour of the Tower of London.

Denver Charles and Ellen Bell attended on behalf of HTANI, and were delighted to support the Northern Ireland winner, Elaine McPeake, as she accepted her prize. Elaine, History Teacher at St Dominic’s Grammar School, Belfast was praised for her ‘infectious passion for history and a creative approach stood out to the judges.

She creates immersive classroom experiences for her classes, from recreating Anne Frank’s bedroom and First World War trenches to Renaissance ‘Dragon’s Den’ challenges, where students pitch new inventions to wealthy patrons. Last year, she worked with pupils to create their own Museum of Childhood – students researched toys from the past and interviewed staff about their favourite childhood memories. The exhibition was later displayed at the Ulster Museum, sharing students’ historical discoveries with the wider public.’

It was also a pleasure to be there for the crowning of the overall winner, Elizabeth Carr, Assistant Principal – Curriculum and Subject Lead, Humanities, Avanti Grange Secondary School, Bishop’s Stortford.

It was an inspirational evening in a truly historic setting. We look forward to the next Awards.
