Beyond Borders project with IWM

Sign up to a teacher forum to shape learning resources for the local curriculum or take part in an in-school workshop.

Beyond Borders is a collaboration between the Imperial War Museum (IWM) and the universities of Edinburgh and Swansea that began in March 2024. It examines the impact of the Second World War on national identity across the four home nations, and through the context of empire.

As part of Beyond Borders, IWM are engaging with teachers and academics from Northern Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales to ensure the project has value and impact, across the four nations and their individual curricula. Using the IWM collections, they aim to produce learning resources (KS3) and provide in-person and remote CPD for teachers to navigate the impact of WWII on national identity, looking at themes linked to empire and migration.

Beyond Borders Teacher Forums

IWM are keen to hear from teachers across the UK on how they can tailor this offer to best suit the needs of teachers and educators.

Therefore, they are hosting a series of Teacher Forums around the Beyond Borders project in January 2025. The Forums are designed to bring together teachers to shape the direction of the learning outputs. They are also offering specific sessions for each nation to focus on the individual curricular structures. This is an opportunity to tailor the learning resources to the NI curriculum for local schools.

Beyond Borders in-school workshops

As part of the consultation process, IWM would also like to invite teachers to take part in free in-school workshops for their students. School visits will include a creative hands-on workshop around the themes of national identity and its intersection with Empire, tailored to your local context. This will be an opportunity to learn more about the IWM and their collections, engage with primary sources, and spark new discussions. Workshops will take place between February-March 2024.

If you are interested in taking part, please attend a Teacher Forum to find out more, or get in touch directly with Flavia at IWM (fcahn@iwm.org.uk)
